Marine Gearbox Selection and Identification Guide

How to identify a marine gearbox correctly and which details a supplier needs before a reduction, reversing or propulsion gearbox can be matched.

Published 19 September 2026

A marine gearbox transmits engine power to the propeller shaft at a usable shaft speed and, in most commercial installations, also provides ahead and astern engagement. Because gearboxes are built in long model families with many ratio and mounting variants, identification errors are the most common reason a sourcing enquiry stalls. Identify the unit before anything else The nameplate is the primary source. Record the maker, the model designation exactly as printed (including suffix letters), the serial number, the reduction ratio, and the rated input power and input speed. Where a nameplate is missing or unreadable, a photograph of the casing, the shaft arrangement and any cast markings usually narrows the model family. Reduction ratio The ratio defines shaft speed and therefore propeller match. A gearbox with the correct power rating but the wrong ratio is not a substitute: it changes propeller loading and can overload the engine or leave it unable to reach rated speed. State the required ratio, and state whether a nearby ratio is acceptable. Rating against the engine Gearbox ratings are published against input power at a given input speed and against a duty class. Give the engine maker, model, rated output and rated speed so the rating can be checked rather than assumed. Continuous-duty and light-duty ratings for the same casing can differ substantially. Configuration details that change the part Several details are not optional when matching a gearbox: input rotation direction, mounting angle (in-line, down-angle or vertical offset), output flange or coupling type, PTO provision, clutch type (mechanical or hydraulic), oil cooler arrangement, and the control system fitted. Any one of these can make an otherwise identical model unusable in your installation. Condition terminology Used gearboxes are offered with their known condition stated as it was reported by the source. Refurbished is used only where restoration work is confirmed. Where opening reports, oil analysis or test records exist, they are shared as received; where they do not exist, that is stated rather than implied. Component-level enquiries For gearbox components — bearings, clutch packs, friction plates, shafts, pumps, valve blocks or seals — supply the gearbox model plus the part number or drawing number, and a photograph where possible. Components are frequently model-specific despite looking interchangeable. What to send Maker, model, serial number, ratio, engine details, mounting arrangement, condition accepted, quantity, delivery port and required date. With those details a requirement can be checked against available supply rather than guessed at.
