Vessel sale & recycling

Documents Commonly Needed for a Vessel Sale

A practical checklist of the vessel, ownership, class and recycling documents that buyers commonly ask for when a shipowner offers a vessel for sale.

When a shipowner offers a vessel for sale, buyers usually ask for the same core information first. Having your documents ready helps buyers review the vessel faster and reduces back-and-forth. This page lists the documents most commonly requested. Exact requirements vary by vessel, flag, buyer and sale type, so treat this as a general guide and not legal advice. ## 1. Basic vessel particulars These are normally the first items buyers ask for: - Vessel name and IMO number - Vessel type (tanker, bulk carrier, container ship, general cargo, offshore, other) - Year and place of build - DWT and LDT - Flag and class society - Current location and expected availability - Asking price ## 2. Ownership and registry documents - Certificate of registry - Proof of ownership or title - Details of any mortgage or encumbrance, and release documents where relevant ## 3. Class and statutory certificates - Class certificate and latest survey status - Main statutory safety and pollution-prevention certificates - Recent survey or inspection reports, if available ## 4. Technical documents - General arrangement plan - Machinery details (main engine, generators, key equipment) - Last dry-dock date and report - Recent photos of the vessel, deck, engine room and accommodation ## 5. Additional documents for ship recycling sales For vessels being sold for recycling, buyers commonly ask for: - Lightship weight (LDT) details, such as stability booklet or lightweight survey - Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), where available - Estimated remaining bunkers and onboard stores - Cargo tank condition and any cleaning or gas-free status, for tankers - Intended delivery location or range ## 6. Sale agreement documents Once terms are agreed, the parties normally work with: - A sale agreement (Memorandum of Agreement) between buyer and seller - Delivery and acceptance documents - Deregistration documents, as required by the flag ## Tips for a faster review - Send one complete message with all particulars instead of many partial ones. - Keep file names clear (for example, VesselName_IMO_ClassCertificate.pdf). - Mention any known defects or missing documents upfront. - Share confidential documents only after you are comfortable with the counterparty. ## How Aameen Marine can help Aameen Marine provides vessel sourcing and commercial communication support.
